The Open Championship is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf. Held in the United Kingdom in mid-July each year, it is administered by The R&A and is the only major outside the United States.
The Open is currently the third major of the year, and sits between the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship, attracting over 200,000 spectators from across the globe each year. Since 1860, The Open has been played over some of the world’s most loved links courses and has produced a truly remarkable legacy of great champions. It is the oldest and most international championship in professional golf and its trophy, the Claret Jug, is one of the most iconic trophies in all of sport.
The C3i Group have been selected as The Open’s Digital Communications Partner until 2021.
Our client’s ambition was to enhance on multiple levels the fan experience at The Open. The prestigious event, by its nature, is played over a large area and occupies a significant part of the day. It is hosted on a temporary venue which moves each year, adding to its organisational complexity. Given that technology was chosen to play a key part of the fan engagement process, our deployment needed serious considered thinking to achieve the best results. A robust and highly capable technology platform was required to deliver many of the fan experiences and provide fast and technically complex services to organisers, broadcasters, media and contractors.
To achieve this, we are responsible for the fibre optic infrastructure, ethernet network & IP infrastructure, telephony and on-course WiFi as well as being the point of call for all onsite IT, AV and LED screen requirements.
At each Open Championship held across the UK, we design and setup the digital communications compound, create and deploy the above ground network infrastructure according to the venue’s requirements. We also setup and run the NOC (Network Operations Centre), contract and manage the internet provision, create and manage a robust, secure and reliable private network including wireless provision for over 35,000 spectators per day, create a complex VOIP telephony system and to further enhance the fan experience, we install over 300 iBeacons across the entire course.
C3i Productions produces OPENTV, delivering event specific rich content, distributed to all outlets prior to broadcast via our full IPTV video distribution system. We install and maintain over 400 HD screens through all structures on site, as well as providing content to over 400 square meters of HD LED screens. We also provide two live IP video streams for The Open onsite app and ingest, transcode and rebroadcast 500+ VOD clips to The Open social media.
To ensure a smooth operation, we provide technical support throughout all services, with dedicated support for each key area.
